Flash and Go Review: Part 1

I wanted to write a review for the Silk’n Flash and Go because I have wanted a device like this for years now and if it can help me, I’m sure it can help others too. I really don’t want to type out all of the requirements, product specifications and instructions, but you can find them in the following links:

I can’t remember the last time I confidently wore a pair or shorts or a swimsuit. Once I started getting hair on my legs, it was really dark and seemed to start growing immediately after shaving. I have always struggled with razor burn and ingrown hairs no matter what; I have tried exfoliating before shaving, soaking my legs in warm water, using conditioner instead of shaving cream, using witch hazel before and after shaving, constantly moisturizing, even shaving in the opposite direction of hair growth. NOTHING WORKED! There are people who don’t feel comfortable wearing swimsuits because they are not happy with their weight, and then there are people like me who don’t feel comfortable wearing swimsuits because they can’t shave their legs and bikini area without having red spots and hair trapped under skin all over the place.
I ordered straight from the Silk’n website and was lucky enough to find a discount code from their Facebook page; 20% by using the code MAROS (expires March 31, 2013) at checkout. By using this code, I was able to get the Silk’n Flash and Go device (priced at $299.99) and an extra cartridge for $288.15 and that was including 3-day shipping! When I opened the package, I was surprised to see that the product came with an extra cartridge so I ended up with a total of three with each one holding 1000 flashes (a full body’s worth according to some people). I am sure I would have known this if I would have read all of the product details, but when I got the okay to order it from my husband I started clicking away! I had already done a lot of research and due to my light skin complexion and dark body hair, I was sure that I wouldn’t have issues getting good results. In comparison to the TRIA laser hair removal device, the only major differences I noticed that swayed my decision were the larger treatment size and the fact that the Flash and Go must be plugged in to use it. Some people may prefer a cordless laser hair removal device, but from reading the TRIA reviews, a lot of people said that they had to charge their TRIA device midway through a treatment and that wasn’t something I wanted to deal with.

Treatment I
02/28/2013

The first areas I decided to treat were my underarms. I did the skin tone test as requested and started out at the lowest level. I will say that I was a little nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. A little word of advice; you need to make sure the laser is pressed firmly against the area you are treating otherwise nothing will happen when you press the trigger button. Again, this is probably something I would have known had I read everything first. The first flash went off and I didn’t feel anything besides a little heat and there was a very light smell of the hair burning, but I wouldn’t call it pain and it only took about a total of 3 minutes total.
Next I moved on to my bikini line and turned the level up to 2 since I had no discomfort with level 1. I do have a small mole on my bikini line and I was afraid to go too close to it since the laser targets dark melanin (skin pigment) and could cause burns so I avoided it. Again, there was no pain or discomfort, just a heating sensation and a very light snapping and took about 6 minutes to finish.
I regularly shave a few hairs around by belly button on my stomach because they grow in completely black so I treated them next leaving the laser set to level 2. No pain there either and I only did about 5 different flashes so that took less than a minute. I didn’t get around to doing the upper parts of my legs yet (I’ll do those tonight) because I didn’t want to sit in the bathroom much longer since it was time to start dinner, but I did do my lower legs on level 3. Maybe I have tough skin on my legs, but I didn’t feel anything during this process besides some heat and snapping under my knees which was expected. My lower legs took a about 15-20 minutes to complete and it was a little tough trying to get every spot because you can’t see what has been treated and what hasn’t been. A little tip that sort of helped me was pressing a little harder to leave the rectangle imprint in my skin so I knew how far to move with the next flash. If I notice any changes before my next treatment on March 14th, I will update this blog. Check back on March 15th at the latest for Part 2.
